The Museum of Southwestern Biology at UNM is one of the Largest Natural History Collections in the World
The collection of mammals comes in second only to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.

The Museum of Southwestern Biology (MSB) is housed within the Center for Environmental Research, Informatics & Art (CERIA) building in the middle of UNM’s main campus. Twenty-five years ago, the building was the location of the UNM Bookstore. It’s easy to walk past the humble building—a circular water fountain out front marks the spot— never suspecting it houses over five million plant and animal specimens from around the globe. In fact, the mammal collection is the second largest in the world, trailing only the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
