Part 1: The Cactus

Here at Nob Hill News, we are big fans of independent journalism—for obvious reasons. And it just so happens that we are neighbors with one of Albuquerque’s most influential and storied examples of an independent news source in the form of UNM’s Daily Lobo, the student newspaper that has been covering the University for well over a century. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be celebrating the history of the Daily Lobo and the spirit of student journalism it has kept alive.
What is it about the Lobo that’s worth celebrating? Simply put, the Lobo is not a product of UNM’s administration, staff, or anybody other than the undergraduate students of UNM themselves. And that’s the way it has been ever since its beginning. There are times that independence has put it at odds with UNM’s faculty, administration, staff and governing bodies—as it should—and we’ll be touching on a few of those stories over the course of this series.
But first, let’s start at the beginning.
