An Ode to Nob Hill Alleys
An adjacent world of common wonders

In the 1980s fantasy series and accompanying book by Neil Gaiman, Neverwhere, there is a world called “London Below” that underlays the city of London and can only be arrived at with a bit of luck, maybe a bit of magic. When I take my habitual 7 a.m. walk with my dog, I practice what I call “dogomancy,” an act of divination like necromancy or cartomancy, but where the dog leads the way with his weird dog wisdom. Inevitably, we end up in the alleys that run on the north side of Central Avenue as we wind our way towards the grass of Johnson Field. I like to think of this adjacent otherworld as “Albuquerque Beside.”
