Longtime drainage problems often lead to flooding in the Pueblo Alto neighborhood during storms, but now the city is working on a fix that would also benefit surrounding communities. After years of study and design, construction has begun on a $6.5 million modern green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) project in the District 7 neighborhood.

Pueblo Alto, bordered by Lomas, Constitution, San Mateo and Washington, was built in the 1950s in the remains of a former arroyo. But over the decades, its stormwater infrastructure has not kept up, especially after large rainstorms. The city’s Department of Municipal Development (DMD), which is heading up the GSI project, said there are now new soils and techniques available to better manage drainage and stormwater runoff.
